DOUBLE GOLD

2010 Federico Paternina Reserva Rioja

Houston Rodeo International Wine Competition class champion, Rioja Reserve $13-$24

Winery/vineyards/winemaker: The winery was founded in 1896 and constructed on a site in Ollauri in Rioja Alta, Spain, that features cellars dating from the 16th century. Ernest Hemingway was said to have been a huge fan of the wines and visited in 1956. In 2014, it became part of the Marqués de la Concordia family of wines. Tempranillo dominates, but you’ll taste the garnacha component, too. The wine spends 12 months stabilizing in vats, then another 24 months in oak casks before bottling.

Winemaker notes: “Elegant bouquet with tones of vanilla. Good structure and full-bodied. Complex and well-balanced.”

Pairings: Beef and venison. Cassoulet. Beef bourguignon.

Price: $14.99 at Spec’s
