Wine Enthusiast features 2020’s Best Vintages to Drink

Each year Wine Enthusiast puts together one of the most comprehensive wine vintage charts available. Their goal is to help guide which bottles to drink, chronicling nearly 25 years of wine across the globe.

Here is where Rioja Reds stand: 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010*, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014

* Indicates the highest-rated vintage currently in their peak drinking window.

Would you like to know what the vintage was like on that year that is so special to you?

Vintages and harvests

Rioja wines are aged in 225-litre oak barrels, with periodic rackings, followed by a further period of bottle aging. Rioja has the largest number of barrels of any wine region in the world, 1.3 million in fact. The different Rioja wine categories are based on minimum aging periods, which can vary between 1 and 3 years in barrels and between 6 months and 6 years in the bottle, depending on whether the wine is to be a Crianza, a Reserva or a Gran Reserva.
