Find the perfect picnic wines this summer
The picnic season is here, and we’ve got some top tips to make yours extra special with the perfect food and wine pairings, while bringing a touch of Spanish warmth and flair to your summer.
The humble crisp
Firstly, a picnic is not a picnic without the humble crisp, the UK’s favourite snack! The good ol’ ready salted crisp is a fantastic palate cleanser, with the saltiness bringing out the fruitiness and juiciness of a wine.
For those of you who want to take your crisp and wine tasting experience up a notch, try salt & vinegar with a bright and citrusy wine like a delicate Rioja Viura. Cheese & onion crisps are almost designed to be drunk with a creamy, full-bodied white, while the BBQ crisp pairs excellently with a red Rioja Reserva due to the luscious body, mouthfeel and woody notes – ideal to handle the richly flavoured snack!
The classic sandwich – pincho
Cater to all tastes, from toppings to wine choice, by feasting on the Spanish classic pincho, a variety of open-top sandwiches. Why not try layering serrano ham and padrón peppers on a slice of sourdough bread, paired beautifully with light, fruity and spicy red Rioja Crianza. Or, go vegetarian, with a generous helping of goat’s cheese, beetroot and chives, served with a citrusy and fresh white Rioja which will cut beautifully through the cheese. You can’t go wrong with this Spanish classic.
During the midday heat, why not try a fresh, seasonal and local Spanish salad, pipirrana. Using primarily tomatoes, cucumber, green pepper, and doused in olive oil, this is a Spanish summer staple. The delicate, fresh flavours of the salad and a luscious, fruity Rioja Rosado are a match made in heaven, and the two together are regularly found on a Spanish table at lunch. [source: Olive Tomato]
To make the most of the long, summer daylight, whip up a Spanish Tortilla (also known as Spanish omelette), which will be the heart of the summer picnic. Pair this with a young red, promoting the fresh red berry fruits in the wine and highlight the classic flavours in the food. The lovely long fresh finish of the wine and food is a winning combination. It also goes down a treat during the cooking process… [Source: Jamie Oliver]
