Movimiento Vino D.O. day’s central event will be a toast held in the ruins of the church of San Pedro in Viana at one-thirty on Saturday 12 May.
The various Designations of Origin come together to pay homage to wine producers, to recognise the importance of quality wine, and to make the public in general, and young people in particular, aware of the value of DO wines.
Movimiento Vino D.O. day is celebrated for the second consecutive year, on Saturday 12 May. This year it brings together 27 Designations of Origin to showcase the importance of wine with a distinguishing mark (wine with a DO) as a distinctive and prestigious product in many regions of Spain, and to make the public in general, and young people in particular, aware of the values associated with it: authenticity, the importance of origin and protecting it, food safety, cultural roots, diversity, environmental protection, and a healthy lifestyle.
A total of 27 designations of origin participate in the second Movimiento Vino D.O. day: Almansa, Arlanza, Binissalem-Mallorca, Bullas, Calatayud, Cariñena, Catalunya, Cigales, Condado de Huelva, Jerez-Xéres-Sherry y Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda, La Mancha, Madrid, Montilla-Moriles, Monterrei, Navarra, Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra, Ribeiro, Ribera del Duero, Ribera del Guadiana, Rioja, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Uclés, Utiel-Requena, Valdepeñas, Valencia and Yecla.
As a common thread, the day will revolve around a simultaneous mass toast that, in the DOCa Rioja, is to take place at 1.30 pm in the ruins of the church of San Pedro de Viana, preceded by the simple gesture of revolving the glass before toasting.
The Control Boards of the 27 Designations of Origin are bringing together wine enthusiasts and wine novices to publicise the different grape varieties produced in their regions, inviting them to discover different brands, to take part in competitions and draws, and to enjoy music and theatrical performances along with tasting sessions of typical products, some of them produced by big-name chefs.
Movimiento Vino D.O. day was held for the first time on 20 May 2017 and brought together close to one thousand people in Paseo del El Espolón in Logroño. It is an initiative of the Spanish Conference of Wine Control Boards (CECRV), as indeed is Movimiento Vino D.O. According to the president of the CECRV, David Palacios, “it is very positive for everyone (grape growers, wineries and consumers) to be able to celebrate a day like this, where people can come along and discover wines that are made in their place of origin. D.O. wine is a hallmark and a deep-rooted cultural component of numerous villages and regions in Spain. It is something that distinguishes us and sets us apart from the rest. Something very much in our blood, that we should celebrate.”
The Movimiento Vino D.O. day seeks to showcase the importance of the quality wine produced in Spain to so many of our villages, towns and rural areas; indeed one of the world’s most diverse winemaking regions.
You can check out the programmes and venues of the 28 Designations of Origin taking part in the Day on the website of the Movimiento Vino D.O. and its social media using the hashtag #DíaMovimientoVinoDO.
Movimiento Vino D.O. was created in 2016 and today is the public brand with which the Spanish Conference of Wine Control Boards (CECRV), the national association that represents all Spanish wine Designations of Origin, communicates with end consumers to disseminate the culture of Designation of Origin wines. With a presence on the internet through its website, various social media and its own YouTube channel, it employs a straightforward, unpretentious language to connect with the public in general and young people in particular through attractive content, competitions and experiences.
